An up to date list of all anthelmintics (worming and fluke) products available to sheep farmers for 2012 has been published by SCOPS today. It includes the new 5-SI group and gives information of all products, the chemical groups and withdrawal periods.

Nematodirus Alert
Sheep farmers are urged to be on their guard as temperatures look set to increase rapidly this week following a cold month so far. This could precipitate a large hatch of Nematodirus eggs on pastures which poses a major threat to late March and April born lambs.

UK Gets First Dual Active Worming Product
At the end of March, the first worming product for sheep to contain two broad spectrum active compounds (derquantel the new novel 5-SI group + abamectin a 3-ML group), was launched on to the UK market (Startect™ available through your Vet). This is a very important addition to our armoury of products available to deal with worm burdens and if used correctly will help us to delay the impact of anthelmintic resistance (AR) on sheep performance.

Nematodirus update
There have been reports of some cases of Nematodirus from AHVLA labs. in recent days in Wales, North west and Midlands of England. Sheep farmers need to stay on their guard particularly for lambs that are approaching 4 weeks of age on high risk pastures should the weather suddenly warm up.

Nematodirus Warning
Sheep farmers need to be on their guard against Nematodirus outbreaks over the coming weeks as AHVLA reports an outbreak this week in Wales. While the warm weather in March lead to an early hatch in some areas at a time when susceptible lambs were not at pasture, the current cold snap could mean a sudden hatch of Nematodirus larvae when it turns warm again.

Sheep Skin Parasites Survey
Eblex in collaboration with ADAS and University of Bristol are conducting a survey to try and get a better understanding of the extent of sheep scab and other skin parasites in the UK sheep flock. A copy of the survey is attached and SCOPS would encourage all sheep farmers to complete this and return it by 20th April 2012.
