Liver Fluke Alert!
Sheep farmers must be on their guard against liver fluke this autumn says Philip Skuce a leading scientist at Moredun. "We are now approaching peak liver fluke season and having experienced one of the mildest winters on record across the UK followed by a very wet summer, some areas of the country are going to have a very high level of liver fluke because these conditions provide ideal conditions for the mud snails that are an essential host during part of the fluke's life-cycle' says Philip.

Nematodirus Risk Increasing
As the temperatures begin to rise the number of areas now in the orange range (7-14 days from a hatch) is increasing. With a cold week in store for most of us, there is a risk of these areas suddenly turning red should the cold week be followed by a warm spell.

COLD WEATHER HOLDING NEMATODIRUS BACK
The continued cold weather is keeping a lid on Nematodirus hatching over much of the UK. However some cases are being reported and south facing, sheltered fields are a risk. With a cold week forecast there is a mounting risk that there will be a sudden improvement in temperatures which could herald a mass hatch so farmers need to check the nematodirus forecast regularly.

Colder Weather Following First Nematodirus Cases
The first case of Nematodirosis causing deaths and scouring in lambs was been confirmed in the Hereford area two weeks ago. The lambs were about 4 weeks of age and grazing high risk pasture with south facing slopes. Since then, colder weather has helped keep a lid on nematodirus hatching, which means we need to be all the more vigilant when it warms up! Many weather stations are now yellow - watch out for when the one you are using turns orange and think about south facing areas where even limited sunshine can create a warm microclimate.
