Earlier this week (Tuesday 7th March 2023), the Sustainable Control of Parasites in Sheep (SCOPS) group welcomed agricultural journalists and other guests to a press briefing about the threat posed by nematodirus this spring - and steps farmers, vets and advisers can take to protect spring-born lambs.
With the UK in the grip of arctic temperatures, the risk posed by nematodirus is likely to be later for many flocks this year, the speakers explained, but could be significant if the cold snap is followed by sustained warm weather and prompts a 'mass hatch' of the worm that specifically affects young lambs grazing grass for the first time (at about six weeks' of age). Lesley Stubbings of SCOPS and Dave Bartley of Moredun talked about how nematodirus is 'predictably unpredictable' and the functionality of the free SCOPS Nematodirus Forecast to help producers and advisers monitor and manage risk to individual flocks.
